...plane (owned by a British firm, Airwork, Ltd.) had its seats arranged in a novel way: backs to the engines, so that passengers faced the tail. Many air experts have long held that this would be safer in case of accidents. As the Hermes cracked open, most of the passengers were hurled from their seats through the huge gash in the plane's body, into the sea. Seven people were almost certainly killed.
