...Aime, Je T'Aime is a frosty movie about love, life and time travel directed by Alain Resnais. In Hiroshima Mon Amour and Last Year at Marienbad, Resnais evolved an elliptical style of editing that included streams of consciousness, unconsciousness and dreams, all edited so tightly that the audience had to shift rapidly between tenses and dimensions. This technique made his films intellectual teasers, but it also tended to weaken the rather fragile narrative line. The scenario of Je T'Aime has been almost completely overwhelmed. It was supposed to be a kind of comic-strip fantasy about...
...plot could have been lifted from a 1933 story conference at Warner Brothers. Siffredi (Alain Delon) is a petty crook, all bile and brilliantine, who goes looking for his girl friend Lola (Catherine Rouvel) after his latest prison term has expired. Stalking the streets of Marseille, he finally finds her happily biding her time with a nattily tailored sharpie named Capella (Jean-Paul Belmondo). Siffredi immediately initiates repossession proceedings. Capella only grins. Siffredi glowers. Capella still grins. Then, of course, they fight. After knocking each other around for a while, over pool tables, into mirrors, across bars, that sort...
...winter and spring, the French Maoists firmly established themselves on the outer fringes of the lunatic left with a series of riots, bomb attacks and a daring caviar and foie gras heist in broad daylight at Fauchon, the epicures' haul grocery of Paris. Next, one of their leaders, Alain Geismar, 26, advised that they make it a "hot summer for the bourgeoisie." Shortly before he was hauled off to jail for inciting riots, Geismar made a tape recording in which he urged his comrades to camp in the gardens of private villas, picnic on golf greens and convert gambling...
Sklar: I think that kind of enapsulating of Beckett is garbage. Beckett's world is comprchensive and everyone I've read, really, except a tiny little article by Alain Robbe-Grillet, everyone tries to take a slice of the pic and say. "this is Beckett." Ruby Kahn interprets Endgame from a religious point of view, somebody clse says it takes place inside a womb, another says it's the beginning. I find myself enraged cach time I see one of these interpretations as a sort of umbrella that it has to go under...
...leader of the Manalese family, a friendly bunch of transplanted Sicilians who operate a nice business selling jukeboxes and pinball machines. The big profits, however, are made in the office up the warehouse stairs, where Papa and his boys plot some elegant crimes, like springing a fellow countryman (Alain Delon) from a locked police van. Delon has managed to wangle some inside dope about the alarm system at a big jewel show in Rome's Villa Borghese. Gabin sees this as potentially the biggest heist of all time. In company with a couple of American colleagues, he sets...
