...raising a piglet for the bacon or growing your own wheat to grind into flour," Ruhlman wrote on his blog. "Yes, extra credit for either, but I want this to be a challenge that everyone can accept, whether you live in a Manhattan walk-up or rural North Carolina, Alaska or suburban splendor. From scratch means: You grow your tomato, you grow your lettuce, you cure your own bacon or pancetta, you bake your own bread (wild yeast is preferred and gets higher marks but is not required), you make your own mayo." What made you decide to write this book? Living here in Alaska, cold is pretty much present all the time. Whether it's actually cold outside or not, you see signs of cold everywhere. The street in front of my house, for example, is very badly frost-heaved, so it has big waves in the street. Looking in the mountains that I can see outside my window, there is very obvious glacial erosion that creates these beautiful U-shaped alpine valleys. ...says, "You should do a book called Warmth. You could do all the background research in Aruba." It's a fair point. Did that ever cross your mind? It crossed my mind a little bit, but it would have been darned inconvenient, since I live here in Alaska. Minnesota Representative Michelle Bachmann, a fierce opponent of Obama's reform plans, read large portions of it on the House floor. "Watch out if you are disabled!" she warned. Days later, in an online posting, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin attacked Emanuel's "Orwellian thinking," which she suggested would lead to a "downright evil" system that would employ a "death panel" to decide who gets lifesaving health care. By Aug. 10, hysteria had begun to take over in places. Mike Sola, whose son has cerebral palsy, turned...
Culvahouse was right - choosing the little known Alaska governor as his running mate represented a daring risk, but unfortunately for the GOP it backfired. The excitement generated by Palin's surprise pick, her unorthodox political pedigree and electrifying convention acceptance speech would dissipate as she increasingly appeared unprepared for the nation's No. 2 office. Top McCain strategist Steve Schmidt believed Palin's series of disastrous interviews with CBS' Katie Couric was "one of the worst performances ever" by a national political candidate (Balz and Johnson report that Palin put off preparing for the interview, oddly, to focus on completing...
