The lure of the Gulf is irresistible: estimated oil reserves of up to 36 billion bbl., nearly four times as much as in Alaska's Prudhoe Bay. Though the right-wing ideologues are not yet strong enough to destroy the Bush presidency, they are capable of inflicting political damage.
