Sitting in the audience the other night, however, I truly enjoyed the experience. I began to understand that the `beauty' of the show lay in the talents exhibited on and off the stage, delivering a witty, entertaining and spectacular, albeit lewd, production...

When it comes to press relations, the polished Clinton might seem to have a natural advantage over the mercurial mayor, but Giuliani deals with New York reporters every day, albeit icily; Hillary deals with them not at all. "The New York media being what they are," says Bill Cunningham, who ran Moynihan's last campaign, "they would be looking for new ways to bring up old questions." How would Hillary hold up under scrutiny into Filegate, Travelgate, Whitewater, her commodities trades, to say nothing of inquiries about her marriage? On recent p.r.-friendly trips, she has frozen up when reporters...

...Aliar, Jason Mills '99 skillfully evades our sympathies--the moment he is threatened, he turns into a shell-shock poster child and begins writhing all over the floor. He turns into a worm. Furthering this redoubling of the gender-turn as species-turn, Bryan Leach '00 plays an anthropomorphic (albeit morphologically impaired [a la Rilke's Archaisicher Torso Apollos]) dog, a stereotypical Scotland Yard scrub, who's neutered jokes wear thin, to say the least. ...Velvet Goldmine eclipse everything else in the film. Recalls director Haynes: "When she agreed [to work on Velvet Goldmine], I started leaping up and down because I knew how important the costumes were to this film. Sandy's work is impeccably rich." Powell's best move in Goldmine, albeit the quietest, is ensuring that rock-star Brian Slade, the film's lead character, never looks all that different offstage than he does when he's performing. His lover and rival Curt Wild opts for black behind the scenes, but Slade believes in glam-rock's life-as-spectacle ethos more...

...problem with this empathetic if unimaginative movie, based on Sonny Bono's memoir, is that it refuses to be awful--viewers expecting camp will do better trolling VH1 for Cher videos. The story of Sonny and Cher's rise and fall, comeback and dissolution is standard-issue backstage drama, albeit one with more bobcat vests than usual. Renee Faia does a spot-on Cher, suggesting humanity beneath the tics. Jay Underwood gets Sonny's doofiness but not, one realizes in its absence, the wimpy vulnerability that made him tolerable. The revelations, then, are that Sonny's stage persona...
