Tuesday Jobs heads for Boston, traveling commercial, albeit first class. Once there, he surveys the Castle, a puny downtown venue chosen months ago for what was expected to be a snoozer of a speech to Mac enthusiasts by Amelio. Jobs has assembled an army of showmen to orchestrate his--and Apple's--return to competition. There is theatrical lighting and a concert-quality sound system. He stares at the mega columns with the Apple logo cut into them, grimaces at their "Hitlerish" appearance, but decides it's too late to do anything about them. Then he sets to work...

These sections, albeit excellent, are presented by Walton as peripheral, as stuff to get out of the way so you can get back to the good stuff--spark plugs, transmissions and powertrains. These minute mechanical tales, however, grow tiresome. No doubt there is a great story here somewhere,but it is certainly not going to be found under the hood--which is exactly where Walton spends the majority of her time looking...
Alone of the trio, Ravenhill admits to a certain amount of book learning (he holds a drama degree and has spent his albeit brief professional life working in literary offices of small theater companies, nurturing emerging young playwrights like himself) and is the only one who seems to be working consciously within a particular form. His Shopping and F______ belongs to the subgenre of so-called smack-and-sodomy plays, in which drug use is rampant and sex is graphic, brutish and usually anal.
