Yesterday evening, the annual Take Back the Night (TBTN) rally which culminates the week's events provided an opportunity for survivors of violent sexual attacks to speak out and reclaim their sense of safety and comfort from the personified, albeit symbolic, "owner" of the night. This amorphous Mr. Danger, he who lurks in the shadows between blue light phones, also keeps my grandmother up at nights. He, (sorry guys, but this is definitely not a gender-neutral character) could be disguised as the charming preppy boy at the party who innocently offers you a sweet-tasting drink. While some critics...
...time the next song, an audience participation piece, began, I found myself relieved to see that there was set music and words (albeit they were only "ah-ah-ah") printed in the program for us to follow. But it was only after I witnessed my own--the audience's own--complete inability to sing even the melody of this song did I understand the amount of skill and talent needed to produce these intricate songs...
...will hit when Radcliffe stops manufacturing all that other cool stuff with its name on it. And classroom attendance correlates well with academic performance. (The summer before I arrived here, I met a recent Harvard grad who told me that the secret to success at the College was attending class. Of course, I went on to ignore her sage advice...
Also contributing to a sense of community is the newly renovated Goodrich Hall, which mixes a social space with a study area. The gourmet coffee bar helps students deal - albeit artificially - with their procrastination habits, and is open all night. Sawyer Library is open, of course, but tries to discourage procrastination by closing at 1 a.m. The always-busy Snack Bar is a good place for a study break, especially if you've been holed up in the library all day. Lack of social interaction leads to insanity. And no, insane people don't know they're insane...
