...sophisticated Manhattanites throng the Metropolitan Opera House to goggle at old-fashioned Norse gods and blimp-like maidens disporting themselves in animal skins and burlap. The music-dramas of Richard Wagner, with their wilful, slow-witted heroes (Siegfried, Parsifal, Lohengrin), and their clever, conniving villains (Beck-messer, Mime, Alberich), are far & away Manhattan's favorite operas...
...power and its resultant oppression of humanity. The lunette above the door represents the cavern of Niebelheim. The dwarfs who inhabit this underground region are working to create the destructive wealth of the world, symbolized in the legend by the Ring forged from the Rhine gold, for their ruler, Alberich, who is lashing them on to greater labors...

This week the orchestra will sound out the rolling E flat chord which introduces Das Rheingold. The dwarfed, matty-haired Alberich will snatch the gold from the river's depths only to be tricked by the gods. Thus the way will be paved for the colossal musical saga which tracks through a dozen byways, involves a dozen innocents, reaches a peaceful ending only, when greed has completed its own destruction...
