...Dylan was back, having recovered from a serious motorcycle accident, and his album John Wesley Harding was climbing the charts. The Beatles returned from India to release their imaginative "White Album." In The Graduate, the year's top-grossing film, Dustin Hoffman embodied the anxiety of a generation. The Tet offensive shattered America's illusions about military victory in Viet Nam. The assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy shattered the nation's illusions, period. Lyndon Johnson dropped out. Richard Nixon bounced back. The Chicago police and their antiwar adversaries turned the Democratic National Convention into a riot...
Success helps too. The group's new album, What Up, Dog?, is currently cooking on Billboard's Top Pop Albums, and the first single, Spy in the House of Love, hit the No. 1 position on the dance chart. The band has been a smash in Europe, but until the release of What Up, Dog?, America seemed to resist its charms. "We had a hip cachet in Europe," says David, the band's co- founder and lyrics writer. "In America we were has-beens." ...Springsteen's video is, in contrast to Jackson's, refreshingly modest and small-scale, as if he shook out the video scrapbook and passed along some souvenirs. Although approximately a third of the 100-min. tape is taken up with material from the 1987 Tunnel of Love album and tour, most of the gems date back a bit further. An early video of Rosalita, made a decade ago, has a real scruffy, low-tech charm. Springsteen quickly learned not only how to play to the camera but how to work with it as well, and you can see the moment...
