...like a jewel between snow-covered mountains and deep Pacific Ocean inlets, Vancouver, Canada's third largest city and site of the 1986 world's fair, has inspired great pride among its residents. Unfortunately, intense pride sometimes degenerates into parochialism -- or worse. A city alderman intervened recently to stop local merchants from selling T shirts with the slogan HONGCOUVER, B.C. '89. "When I go out I'm absolutely surrounded by Asiatics," complained longtime Vancouver resident John Smythe at a public hearing on immigration last month. "If the doors are wide open, what's going to happen to the Caucasians...
Vito Marzullo had the shock of his life last week. The former alderman, 91, awoke one morning to find his own obituary on the front page of the Chicago Tribune. There was consolation in the encomiums by fellow pols, who hailed Marzullo as the "dean" of Windy City politics. The embarrassed Tribune, still renowned for its DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN headline in 1948, launched an investigation of the gaffe. It turned out that Marzullo's brother-in-law, who lived in the same building, had passed away...
...among blacks that also won the support of some white liberals. That coalition won him re-election in 1987. But his inarticulate successor, Acting Mayor Eugene Sawyer, who took over after Washington's death 16 months ago, was unable to hold the alliance together. His cause was doomed when Alderman Timothy Evans, a Washington disciple, rebuffed Jackson's appeal for black unity. With the black electorate split and black turnout low, Sawyer was easy prey in February's Democratic primary. He was humiliated by Daley, son of the city's late political patriarch, Richard J. Daley...
THERE are a number of reasons why Alderman Tim Evans didn't win last week's mayoral election in Chicago. The biggest problem was pointed out by Chicago Tribune columnist Mike Royko, the consummate Chicago political pundit. "It boils down to what the late Mayor Richard J. Daley"--father of the new mayor, Richard M. Daley--"used to say when one of his candidates lost. The reporters would ask: 'Why did he lose?' With a straight face, Daley would always say: 'He lost 'cuz he didn't get enough votes...
...coalition of white aldermen who had opposed Washington throughout his years in office supported Sawyer, a little-known Black alderman who had reluctantly supported Washington's administration, to cause infighting among Blacks. Daley had his political base of white voters, he just had to make sure that he and his supporters didn't make any racist statements that would unite Black voters against...
