OTHER students concentrate on more traditional, though terribly exacting, struggles with draughtsmanship and realism. Sarah Holly Alderman's "Undergrowth" is an incredibly dense and detailed drawing full of grasses and ferns and wild plants. Her background tree stump floats a little in space, but the range of textures she gets out of her pencil is truly admirable. And Steve Selkowitz's "Mantis," my favorite sculpture in the show, is actually a three-dimensional kind of draughtsmanship. ...hear with their ears but only through their rears." He knows how to kick. To force slumlords, corporations or city officials to clean up buildings, provide jobs or stop cheating consumers, he resorts to picketing, boycotts, rent strikes and some imaginative dramatic stunts. His grandfather had been an alderman, his father was Democratic leader of the 14th Ward. Entering St. Viator's College in Bourbonnais (a later pupil: Fulton J. Sheen), Sheil was ordained in 1910 and assigned to a middle-class parish. He caught Cardinal Mundelein's eye, however, and began to receive promising assignments. He served as chaplain at the Cook County jail, as an assistant at Holy Name Cathedral and was named chancellor of the archdiocese...

Blacks are fielding Richard Austin for mayor this year in Detroit, where almost 40% of the registered voters are black. In Atlanta, nine blacks are running for alderman and at least three will probably be elected...
