...most heroic such effort ever made. As a writer, I admire it greatly. Without wanting to sound like a pompous twit, I think it's the only worthwhile reason to do what we do. As a moviegoer I'm less certain about the movie's effectiveness. Schnabel has an alert, imaginative and unsentimental cinematic eye. He does everything he can to involve us in Jean-Do's struggle against stasis, which is perhaps less a "triumph of the human spirit," a fatuous phrase that ought to be banned from critical discourse, than it is a triumph of the human...
...Guts to Serve After reading Richard Corliss' article about recent war movies, I respectfully disagree with his assessment of Lions for Lambs [Nov. 26]. As a Vietnam veteran, I am always alert for unrealistic cinematic portrayals of the U.S. military. My take on Lions for Lambs is that it was about commitment - and the lack of it. And if I was between REM cycles and heard it, I had the choice: Do I ignore it, make it sleep through the night? Or do I find out what it's trying to tell me? When my husband and I spent a weekend away, unplugged, unpinged...
...trade is under threat from Britain's environment lobby. Several supermarkets, including Tesco and Marks & Spencer, have already responded to pressure to reduce their "carbon footprint" by using an airplane logo on flowers, fruit and vegetables that have been air-freighted to alert environment-minded shoppers...
