...feet ahead after 50 yd., a half-length at the half-mile, three lengths at the halfway mark, where both crews were stroking evenly in the low thirties, a mile and a half from the finish. Hopelessly outclassed, without even waterlogged seats for an alibi, California's crew pulled bravely on at a stroke that went up to 42 in the last half-mile. At the roaring, whistling finish, they were seven lengths behind...
...Park Avenue apartment. Margot Hale, an actress, decides to shield her friend, even at the risk of ruining her career. An ambitious playwright, Philip Elton, finds the situation almost identical with the circumstances at the climax of a play he is reading to Miss Hale. The obvious alibi is given to the police--they were rehearsing and "she didn't know it was loaded." The author has injected several squibs in the Shavian manner, such as "today women are either supermen or twittering neurasthenics," which neither pass...
...fifth man to die in supposed reprisal for the murder 18 months ago of Giuseppe ("Joe the Boss") Masseria, onetime head of Unione Sicilione, friend of "Scarface Al" Capone. Masseria was shot to death in Scarpato's restaurant at Coney Island. Although Scarpato presented a perfect alibi, he lived in mortal dread of vengeance, insisted that police record his fingerprints, had his full name tattooed on his left arm. Died. Florence Agnes Amberg Hurley, 47, second wife of famed Chicago Businessman Edward Nash Hurley; of injuries received in an automobile accident; at Berkeley near Chicago. Mr. Hurley...
