Avant-garde musicians are spooky types, as proven by the recent show at the Middle East featuring Plaid, Nobukazu Takemura and Mira Calix. Alien atmospherics were the theme of the night, with the downstairs lounge of the Middle East and clumps of equally weird onlookers basking in light tinged sickly green. Just when the crowd was convinced that the night couldn’t get any better, the revered Q-Bert blessed the vinyl with his touch. He warmed up with his signature style combining dexterity and sensitivity in a series of eerie, cosmic sounds evoking outer space and alien noises.
