Among publishers, opinions are split. Some are seeking books on currently-popular themes that carry a bonus, like a popular name. For example, novelist Caleb Carr (author of The Alienist) will produce a book on the history of terrorism for Random House. Others are banking on books that personalize the events, hoping that tales from firefighters or Afghan-Americans will have more long-term appeal. Still others are forecasting a retreat from “serious” subject matter and a surge in the popularity of entertainment and sports-themed books. “I think the events...
...Caleb Carr, military historian and author of the best-selling novels "The Alienist" and "The Angel of Darkness," will write a book to be published by Random House in December that examines the history of terrorism. Caleb's best-selling novels (The Alienist, Angel of Darkness) are set a century ago, so it's a nice twist to have him write a mystery thriller set in 2024. We can't wait to see how it ends, especially since, in the spirit of 19th century novelists who, like Charles Dickens, wrote and published books in installments, Caleb is still writing Part 2. Who says editors don't like to live dangerously...
