...University ofAlabama, now considering its third Negro applicant in five weeks. The only one publicly known is Vivian Malone, 20, of Mobile, daughter of a housemaid. Applicant Malone, presently a junior majoring in business education at all-Negro Alabama A. & M., will not have to go to court to establish the right of Negroes to enter the university. The school has been under federal court order not to discriminate ever since 1956, when Coed Autherine Lucy (now studying education at Texas Southern University) was expelled because she charged university collusion with the mobs that chased her from the campus...

He recently moved his Southern Conference headquarters into a predominantly white office building in Atlanta, where he puts up with segregated toilets and restaurants; in contrast. Snick's Atlanta headquarters is a windowless cubicle in an all-Negro district. King began to lose status with young Negroes last May when he failed to take a Freedom Ride into Mississippi. More than three-quarters of Oklahoma's biracial school districts have desegregated, for example, but the number of Negroes in mixed schools is actually declining. Some officials say that many Negro youngsters fear competition with better prepared white children, preferring to get high marks in inferior Negro schools rather than low marks in superior mixed schools. Worse, the decline in Oklahoma's all-Negro high schools seems to be cutting the number of Negro youngsters going on to college...
