Also, it has confirmed my suspicion that as much as I like a limited scandal now and then, I may not have the stomach for all-out scandal. The last scandal I enjoyed without qualification was the one triggered by the revelation that a writer named Clifford Irving was about to publish a book based on extensive interviews with Howard Hughes--a moneybags so maniacally reclusive that he made Thomas Pynchon seem like William Ginsburg. Irving, of course, had dreamed it all up, presumably figuring that a man reclusive enough to make his words particularly valuable would be too reclusive...

Although limited war is now commonly supported as a greatly preferable alternative to all-out war, limited scandal seems a thing of the past. At some point in the O.J. trial, with both sides promising to call witnesses to challenge the credibility of any witness called to challenge the credibility of a witness, it occurred to me that if this lasted long enough, we might all be called to testify...

...late 1980s, though, the EPA banned the so-called organochlorine pesticides as being too toxic. That left termite fighters with a badly weakened arsenal. Even then, Formosan termites might have been controlled with an all-out effort, but few experts understood how grave the problem really was. (One exception, according to a multipart series on the termite threat that appeared in the New Orleans Times-Picayune last week, was Louisiana State University entomologist Jeffery LaFage; tragically, he was killed in a robbery just as he was rallying support for a termite-treatment program in the French Quarter a decade...

Just because officials are finally facing the problem, though, doesn't mean they know how to deal with it. The New Orleans counterattack is more of a series of experimental forays than an all-out assault. In one test, the USDA will attempt to beat back the bugs in an entire 15-block section of the French Quarter by using a variety of techniques all at once. At the same time scientists will try to figure out which of the available poisons is the most effective by treating 15 New Orleans schools with different chemicals...

...this musical, that the scene would not include so much...well, beer. In addition, though the stein dance is obviously intricate and difficult, it pales in comparison to the other tricks of the musical, and becomes disappointingly boring. Also, the menagerie that is "Be Our Guest" is done in true all-out Disney fashion--the plates on the dancers' backs spin around, and even the rug from "Aladdin" shows up--but that doesn't change the fact that Belle, who was pleading for adventure at the start of the musical is now more than content...
