...music more than anything had in the Bach and Mozart. In the third movement, for example, Biss seemed more at home demanding histrionics of the orchestra than he had been before demanding discipline of it. Again, perhaps because of the limitations of his orchestra, his Presto vivace barely passed allegro; but the overbearing horns and the soft sections that never got soft should have been remedied...
...paintings to three schools, Arizona State College, Milwaukee-Downer College and Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y. The market value claimed on her tax returns ranged from $1,000 for an abstraction called Scherzo to $30,000 each for the three parts of her triptych Con Moto, Andante and Allegro. A manly final Allegro brought the soloist, conductor, and orchestra their well-earned bravos...

This oddly structured little sonata has two movements, both allegro, preceded by four measures of 'adagio cantabile.' The harmonies and motives of these four measures contain the thematic material of the following two movements in embryonic form. Hellman saw to it that those materials flowered. Judging Beethoven's instruction, 'Allegro ma non troppo' aright, he chose a properly delberate tempo, then, at the appropriate spots, took liberties with it. In the second movement, he went beyond the bounds...
