This guide to the speech of Southern politicians was written by Arkansas Gazette Columnist Richard Allin. Sometimes, the dictionary shows, the natives' language is formed by the omission of syllables: a "sherf' is "a county law officer," "t'mar" is "the day following today" and "bob war" is "fencing to keep cows in." Contrarily, extra syllables are sometimes inserted: "physical year" is when "financial records must be reconciled," often by the "orditor," a "state fiscal official"; "arthur rightus" is "a disease of the bone joints." Meanwhile, 27 bishops who are staying within the church have signed a "covenant" refusing to recognize women priests. At the Florida meeting, Presiding Bishop John M. Allin, 56, stunned the bishops by declaring that his understanding of ministry, of the Bible and of sexual roles "prevent my believing that women can be priests any more than they can become fathers or husbands." It was Allin's first official statement against women priests since he was elected in 1973. A caucus of women activists in New York and New Jersey, including the wife of Newark's assistant bishop, sent a telegram urging the acceptance of Allin's resignation offer. They passed a freedom-of-conscience clause specifying that no one should...

When agents turned up at Episcopal headquarters, Bishop Milton Wood, chief aide to Presiding Bishop John Allin, let them examine commission files and test church typewriters. Later the two bishops provided other material, figuring it was public information. Meanwhile the grand jury summoned Nemikin and her boss, Hispanic Commission Director Maria Cueto. Both refused to testify, on grounds of religious liberty, but a federal district court denied the claim. Though the national church is paying the two women's legal fees, it is not backing their refusal to testify. This week Maria Cueto is likely to join Raisa Nemikin...

...effect, the censure was both the most and the least that could be done. The House of Bishops had inherited the case after a board of inquiry decided that church courts had no jurisdiction. The House could have ordered a trial, but Presiding Bishop John Allin pleaded, "No trials-we don't have time for trials." At the same time, most of the bishops wanted to oppose strongly their colleagues' defiance of canon...
