...conventional virility doing the "family's" mending is dissipated by Fernand's softness of manner and voice. It is his nature to be a gentle, mothering person. This overflowing warmth has been cruelly diverted away from his own children because their Ron Ziegler look-alike stepfather will not allow them to see "the lousy fag." The poignance of his longing is captured in a shot of Fernand furtively watching his children from behind a park tree. As his face softens with love, the scene loses all of its initial humor and we see the tragedy of a sexual code which...

...five-in Lion goaltender John McElaney used his octopus-like arms tostymie all Harvard activity in the Columbia zone until almost 20 minutes had passed in the first half. Alberto Billar, back in action this year after being sidelined last fall by a rare tropical disease that would not allow him to sweat, opened the scoring with a long, right-footed shot from the upper left hand corner of the penalty box. In this first essay, she describes a Doors recording session, a college protest, a dress she bought for the star witness in the Sharon Tate murder trials, and creates a whirling kaleidoscope. She draws no conclusion because she cannot--her memories are too vivid to allow a comforting generality...

DIDION'S SENSITIVITY--the very quality that powers her writing--defeats her in the end. She is mired in an emotional bog; the weight of her evocative detail does not allow her to stand back and assess the images she conjures. The White Album's collection of little insights does not add up to one bit one. Didion writes about an intensely debated, copiously documented period, but she doesn't try to impose any order on the chaos. Didion cannot ultimately discipline her own sensitivity, and therein lies the failure of this tightly
