...Buckcherry, not least was 311. The band's name, police code for indecent exposure, becomes more relevant with each progressive year, as their rehashed material becomes increasingly distasteful. Far from their "grassroots" of energetic short sets in sweaty small venues, 311 performed in a large outdoor half-shell for almost two hours. At first, the crowd was psyched and ready to groove, but 311 lost their attention by reserving all of their radio hits for the final twenty minutes. Almost the entire set was devoted to tracks off their upcoming album, Soundsystem, and only the recently released single "Come Original...
...here for your protection and safety." The Iraqis show no fear or hostility, and surround them with pleas for food, medicine and help. This reception is not what they expect, and this scene of the movie, shot with grainy, color-saturated ektachrome film, presents their situation as almost surreal. The walls are painted with vast smiling portraits of Saddam Hussein, hugged by loving children, wearing a tasseled hat and waving a diploma, looking benevolently down the narrow passageways of the bunkers...
...Beastie Boys and Bjork, among others. Jonze's performance is one of the highlights of the film. He portrays Vig with a sort of unstudied exuberance, post-adolescent can-do hyperactivity, and is earnestly naive without a trace of self-parody. He delivers lines that may be almost trite in their ignorance--for example, when he asks an Iraqi rebel leader, "So, you guys think all Americans are Satan, right?" without betraying anything more improprietary than curiousity. His acting carries some of the less compelling scenes out of their self-conscious didacticism, for example, the inevitable "learning about each other...
Take Ahmed. Ahmed was THE fishman at Supersol, the largest grocery store in West Jerusalem, where I did my shopping almost daily this summer. Despite the fact that Ahmed, an Arab-Israeli resident of the Old City of Jerusalem has never seen the ocean, he loves fish. Every day after we said our hellos, regardless of whether I was even purchasing dairy products, Ahmed insisted on describing the catch of the day, in detail, and the exact way to cook salmon or tuna to perfection...
...first feature film Drive Me Crazy she almost lives up to her guest appearance on teen guru Britney Spears new MTV hit video of the same name. This is not a stretch from her previous work, but that is not such a bad thing (remember Elizabeth Berkeley trying to shed her teenybopper image in Showgirls? Neither do I. Staying with what you know can be an extraordinary move, actually). Yet this movie, even (or dare I say especially?) in its clichd nature, pushes that cute little button that makes us all instantly comforted by the tender orderliness of a happy...
