What has been the best way to make money in 2008? In a word: health care. Big percentage gainers include Idenix Pharmaceuticals, a maker of hepatitis and HIV treatments (up 122%, to $5.99); Thoratec, a developer of therapies for heart disease (up 60%, to $29.16); Almost Family, a home-health-care services provider (up 132%, to $45.10); and Sequenom, which does genetic testing (up 93%, to $18.45). Some larger-cap players are also up significantly, if not quite as spectacularly: Barr Pharmaceuticals has gained 23%, and Amgen...

...visit to the plant shows those fears to be unfounded. Orange County's wastewater undergoes more stringent treatment than almost any water source on the planet. First, the dark beer-colored sewage is pulled through a series of tubes stuffed with thousands of fibers pierced with holes 1/300th the size of a human hair. Anything larger than 0.2 millionth of a meter - which includes suspended solids and bacteria - is left behind. The cleansed water is then forced at high pressure through hundreds of tubes that are filled with tightly wound plastic membranes. Reverse osmosis, as the process is called, stops...

...become almost a clichéd gesture to hurl shoes at a poster, a flag or a statue during demonstrations in the Arab world. Perhaps the most iconic example was when U.S. troops helped bring down a statue of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad's Firdous Square on April 9, 2003. Hundreds of Iraqis assailed the giant metal corpse, beating it with their shoes in one of the defining images of the fall of Baghdad. How ironic then that President Bush's farewell trip to Iraq will be marked by the image of an angry Iraqi and his shoes. (See pictures...

...term fix is to build a new Somalia. Nation-building is something the Bush administration initially shied away from in Afghanistan, allowing the Taliban to regroup, and came round to in Iraq, with mixed and frequently bloody results. China provides a better model for nation-building in Africa, focusing almost wholly on the continent's commercial potential - and, as a byproduct, the stabilizing effects of poverty alleviation - by pumping billions into infrastructure in war-torn territories such as Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Angola is now stable, if horribly corrupt; Congo is still at war, but the Chinese...

Somalia is a land that has descended so deeply into misery that "failed state" is now too generous a description for the country. Yet it was hard not to marvel at local politicians, appointed by outside forces, wielding almost no power at all but still able to find ways to make things worse. Case in point: on Sunday, President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed announced that he had fired the Prime Minister, and 24 hours later, parliament rebuffed him. The standoff has further hardened the political paralysis that has denied any prospect of peace to the country's long-suffering people...
