...terrestrial landing was as flawless as the lunar touchdown. As Luna 16 approached the earth, its shielded payload separated from the mother ship, slowed down in the thickening atmosphere, and released drogue parachutes for the final part of its descent. Twelve days after it had been sent aloft from the giant Baikonur space complex 125 miles away. the lunar package was recovered by helicopter from the bleak, sparsely settled Ap steppes of Kazakhstan in central Asia. While the Russians trumpeted news of their accomplishment, the lunar sample was quickly flown to Moscow, where it was turned over for analysis...

Sunflower cannot totally extinguish De Sica's guttering genius. A scene of returning Italian soldiers, for instance, is a fine reminder of the noon of neo-realismo. Wives, mammas and children of the missing gather at the railroad station, holding aloft glossy little snapshots, a forest of question marks. Does anyone know the fate or whereabouts of these vanished? The soldiers move on; the incomplete tragedies remain. ...Mood to Wait. Official Washington is suddenly becoming concerned about the airlines' plight. Though airline executives can decide what kind of planes to buy, how often to fly them and whether to serve steak or salmon aloft, regulatory agencies and Congress, to which the regulators are responsible, have authority over safety rules, routes and fares. Last week Washington's Warren Magnuson, chairman of the Senate aviation subcommittee, announced that he will open hearings next month on "the deteriorating situation in the air-transport industry." Congress and the regulatory agencies, he said, have a "responsibility to take remedial action...

Some flights between New York and Europe take 14 bumpy hours, and all stop at Reykjavik, nobody's Acapulco. Aloft, a party air pervades the aircraft as young people wander the aisle in search of companionship or add to the graffiti on the backs of seats. Lunch and dinner consist of simple food like chicken and peas...
