Last week, pugnacious Premier Daladier struck back at Mussolini and behind each of his moves shrewd French observers could see the heavy hand of the French general staff. The French military clique, alarmed at the reports of German batteries emplaced in the Pyrenees along the Spanish frontier, German air bases at Burgos and Vitoria, and Italian occupation of Majorca, has now become more concerned about keeping open the frontiers to Leftist Spain than French Leftist workers...
...nigsberg two months ago Chancellor Hitler thundered that "there will be no more shooting against German racial comrades along the German borders." Since then Czechoslovakians have been afraid that some Czech frontier guard, policeman or soldier would lose his head and kill one of the little nation's 3,200,000 Sudeten Germans who inhabit the frontier strip along the 1,300-mile Czech-German border. Public performance of works by Jewish composers like Mendelssohn and Gustav Mahler was banned. Likewise banned (though somewhat less systematically...
...years these words from the testament of Mrs. Ellen Phillips Samuel have been so many thorns in the flesh of the Fairmount Park Art Association of Philadelphia. Plump, exacting Mrs. Samuel died in 1913, leaving the association $765,000 to execute her row of dreamed-of statues along the Schuylkill's east bank. Mrs. Samuel's dream, however, gave the association the willies. They thought it smacked of waxworks...
