...what one friend calls them, because they are brought on by a Christmas carol they both love or a recollection of a long-ago vacation. But those close to them also find reassurance in the fact that they talk of their future together in very concrete terms, musing aloud about where they might live and whether either might land a job that comes with a plane...
FRED TUTTLE Last summer Tuttle, 79, surprised Vermont when his semi-spoof run for the G.O.P. senatorial nomination resulted in a win. But it was truly an upset victory: Tuttle's wife Dottie had refused to vote for him and hoped aloud that Vermonters wouldn't send the retired Tunbridge dairy farmer to Washington. Well, the missus is happy again. Though he garnered 23% of the vote--quite a feat since he spent only about $250--Tuttle lost to incumbent Democratic Senator Pat Leahy. "I was proud of him," Dottie admits. Now Fred spends his days hanging...
Being a big fan of Ralph Waldo Emerson Poet in Residence Seamus Heaney, I spent much of the past three weeks hopping from lectures and readings by him to discussions about him. Klein's once anchored the vibrant string of stores along Broad in the fifties and sixties. Thinking back to those days, he praised the treatment of the "little guy" under Mayor Hugh Addonizio, the politician whose bungling and corruption led to the catastrophic 1967 riots...
...Save Traditional Marriage are unvarnished in their appeals. In the most inflammatory and demagogic one, an eight-year-old boy, the son of the group's leader, Linda Rosehill, reads aloud from Daddy's Wedding, a children's book meant to educate kids about gay relationships. In the ad, the boy (who isn't identified) looks very confused, and a voice-over says ominously, "If you don't think homosexual marriage will affect you, how do you think it will affect your children...
