...names on the Boston concert calendar this year compared to previous years. Fortunately, there's a host of talented lesser-known faces arriving. Elliott Smith comes into town tomorrow, while Lockgroove, who headlined last year's Crimson-Advocate band showcase Blast!, performs at the Wheeler-Lynch Gallery. On Monday, alt-metal band Slipknot comes to Avalon while sensation Jill Scott sings at the Paradise. Jill Scott is, of course, part of that same amazing revival of Philly R&B and soul that produced the Roots. (Indeed, Scott wrote the Roots' slinky hit "You Got Me.") Next Friday, Badly Drawn...

...heart-melting romance with guy talk for the fellas and a mellow alt-rock sound track, Ed fits the 30-ish heterosexual-couple demographic like a comfy pair of Dockers. Maybe too much so: funny but safe, it's TV's answer to the date movie. But the laid-back Cavanagh is winning as a Quixote determined to win his love by making "a complete ass" of himself. He's the male version of the beautiful blond with glasses--a handsome guy we can pretend will have to work to get the girl. Whether you hail from Springfield or Soho...

After a year of hard touring and residencies at some of the better tourist traps on Beale Street, the brothers lost their first bass player, recruited their huge, beatific friend Chris Chew and hit the road again, becoming mainstays of the Mississippi-Alabama-Georgia alt-rock circuit. They radiated so much talent, innocence and enthusiasm that an impressive roster of stars--Lucinda Williams, Beck, Warren Haynes, Al Kooper, Widespread Panic--have asked one or both to sit in. And as they developed a following and played longer sets as headliners, they found themselves opening up the hill-country sound with...

...shortly after the Sheila Divine's set the Axis turned on all their lights and informed the crowd that "if you don't work here, you should get out." And so I did. End of night summary: Band from NEMO most likely to get signed, have a mid-level alt-rock radio-played hit and then fade into relative obscurity - the Sheila Divine, Club most likely to kick out the guests of a private industry party early - the Axis, Guests least likely to have any actual power in the music business - all those lip-locking couples...

...band Starling is a surprisingly decent new Canadian offering. With the release of their first album _Sustainer_, the band is hoping to sustain itself in the alt-pop music scene. Formed in 1997 with front man Ian LeFeuvre and Pete Von Althen, Starling doesn't bring anything revolutionary to the music scene, but it does offer a good collection of catchy songs. The album's lyrical content includes traditional, and perhaps clichd, male-centered pop lamentations that would make Petrarch proud. It is Petrarchan pop performed pleasantly, however, as the stories of unattainable girls bumming men out are told with...
