...very nice, but it felt inevitable. This is a fashion season in which commerce has triumphed over art, directors like Luhrmann and Robert Altman are making fragrance commercials, and celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Mick Jagger, Sofia Coppola and the Presley family (Priscilla, Lisa Marie and her daughter Riley Keogh) are mingling with the press at private dinner parties in Milan and Paris. The clothes--fabulous as many of them are--often seemed secondary to the loud whir of the celebrity p.r. machine...
...recent fund-raising dinner attended by 60 Democrats at Joe Allen's, an American restaurant in Paris. Voting registrars for the parties have also fielded queries from expats who want to know whether they can vote in crucial swing states, where they may have previous ties. Abigail Altman, a Democrat and co-owner of the Red Wheelbarrow Bookstore on Paris' Right Bank, was able to sign up to vote in Florida where she used to live and her mother still resides, even though her last U.S. address was in Massachusetts, Kerry's home state. ...Eightball" #23 (Fantagraphics Books; 40 pages; $7), continues Clowes' ever more remarkable maturation as an artist with the single-issue story, "The Death Ray." Two years ago, "Eightball" #22 gave us an Altman-esque fractured look at the strange residents of suburbia (see TIME.comix review). Instead we get Andy, AKA The Death Ray, a drip...
With an extended stage taking up nearly as much space as the audience, director Robyn Nevin gives the lithe film star room to prowl. A new adaptation by Blanchett's husband, Andrew Upton, which splices up Ibsen's acerbic dialogue as if in a Robert Altman movie, keeps things brisk and tense. And Blanchett plays Hedda - whose dalliance with old flame Lovborg (Aden Young) brings her under scrutiny by family friend Judge Brack (Hugo Weaving) - as neither victim nor villain, but rather as a kind of classy control freak. This most un-neurotic of actresses makes Hedda's animal instinct...
...Edwards as his running mate. Meanwhile, some of the biggest names from the Clinton diaspora have found new homes--and possibly future employment--in Kerry's world. For economic policy, Kerry taps former White House economic adviser Gene Sperling, Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin and Deputy Treasury Secretary Roger Altman. He also asks them to speak on his behalf in the daily sound-bite war with the Bush campaign. Clinton's U.N. representative Richard Holbrooke is so influential when it comes to Kerry's foreign policy views that he is considered the odds-on favorite to become Secretary of State...
