...festival, and also two people named A. Lehm and D. Oliva, apparently highly-regarded as critics (Lehm helped choose and order the films), and they're comments are bound to instructive, because Czech films of the New Wave are complex, multi-layered movies. Combining the manic blackness of Altman with the visual scope of the great German directors--you either feel as if you could step into the great wide spaces on the screen and raise a family or immensely claustrophobic--this was the finest expression of cinema east of Paris since Eisenstien, and foreshadowed the cold brilliant world...

...Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Benjamin Altman has delivered the bottom line. He has ruled that the buttocks can henceforth be considered private parts in New York State, and that fanny fondling is indeed sexual abuse. Said the judge: "If the alleged occurrence had in fact taken place in an area where the social mores condone the unconsented touching or pinching of the buttocks (rumor has it that Italy may be such an area), perhaps the defendant's position could be sustained. However, here the touching of a woman's buttocks without her consent is not treated so cavalierly...

...Semi-Tough falls short of the goal line. Ritchie packs his scenes with slapstick asides, including Korov the place-kicker whose only lines are in Russian; these are cruder than Altman but at times exhilaratingly funny. But Ritchie still doesn't know how to use actors--he should hope six-foot eight, 275-pound Doug Atkinson, the prototype for Jenkins' defensive end T.J. Lambert, doesn't see this movie. Ritchie's biggest mistake might have been firing Ring Lardner Jr. as the scenarist. Lardner's credits include M.A.S.H. and he probably genetically knows more about pro athletes than Ritchie. Kristofferson...

Audrey Hepburn wore his fashions in Breakfast at Tiffany 's. During the 1961 presidential visit to France, Jacqueline Kennedy dazzled an opera crowd at Versailles with her white Hubert de Givenchy. Now, to commemorate the 25th year of his couture house, Manhattan's B. Altman is staging a retrospective show of 70 Givenchy creations. Says the designer: "After I open a collection and see people trying on my clothes and treating them roughly, I suffer. My dresses are like my family...

...million spy thriller starring Kirk Douglas. Governor James Thompson lent a state helicopter to the crew to scout locations, waived permits to allow equipment to be hauled across state lines and persuaded the owners of a Lake Forest estate to allow filming in their home. When Director Robert Altman was filming A Wedding, for 20th Century-Fox distribution (the movie stars Mia Farrow and Geraldine Chaplin), Thompson declared a Robert Altman Week and held a big bash for the cast and crew at a Chicago disco. Which points up another advantage of attracting film makers: besides being good business, hanging...
