...been Slobodan Milosevic - after all, the Serbian strongman has little reason to fear the veteran opposition leader these days. In contrast to the string of professional hits that have eliminated both friend and foe of the Milosevic regime over the past year, Friday's attempt on Draskovic was an amateurish hit-or-miss affair, the gunmen spraying the opposition leader's holiday apartment with automatic rifle fire while he was vacationing in Montenegro. But not even an attempt on his life is likely to restore his declining political fortunes...

...write your Oscar-acceptance speech just yet. The iMovie software is designed to let you dabble in an amateurish fashion. It's fine if you want to make Budweiser commercials; less so if you want to make Battleship Potemkin. Try to deal with more than 20 min. of clips in a file, and iMovie chokes. At least that was my experience during the making of Carnival...

...likely that at least one other person would have been required to transform the volatile chemicals in Ressam's trunk into bombs. The chemistry alone could take a couple of days; the assembly process would have been tricky as well. Ressam's chosen crossing point seemed amateurish: he would stand out among the sparse travelers. And though he could be a lone crank with a totally fanciful notion of what it takes to perpetrate mayhem, if he is not, it means several other people have to be in on the plot. "It's a multiheaded monster," says a French official...

...band of loyalists (former chief of staff Maggie Williams has come back from Paris to help). Remaking herself won't be easy, especially in a year when the press is busy gauging each candidate's authenticity. So far, her attempts to turn herself into a New Yorker have been amateurish. When the Chicago native proclaimed herself a closet Yankees fan, when the Methodist disclosed her Jewish roots, when the advocate for poor children came out in favor of milk price supports--these moves made her seem craven, ham-fisted. When the progressive copied her husband's tactic of using party...

...Dogma's greatest shortcoming, however, is glaring: amateurish cinematography. Not one for lush visuals, Smith has never been overly concerned with the aesthetic aspect of movie making. Although inexpert camerawork is not only pardonable in his previous films, but also considered a Smith trademark, the home video ambiance just doesn't work in Dogma. With few action sequences and even fewer special effects, Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy didn't demand much camera movement (even Smith, before beginning work on Dogma, self-effacingly assured that he'd "move the camera this time.") The inconsistent camera angles are so vexing, they...
