...understand the deep bewilderment that Election Day '98 visited on the Republicans, you had only to look at Senators Al D'Amato and Lauch Faircloth, two of Bill Clinton's sweatiest pursuers, making their baffled concessions. Or to hear Newt Gingrich, who said last April that he would never give another speech without mentioning the White House scandals, complaining about how it was the media that had been obsessed with the whole nasty thing. Or to see Henry Hyde, whose House Judiciary Committee must still find its way down from Mount Monica, as he promised last week to descend...

...delivered. Of course, not every candidate she stumped for won--but well over half did, many in squeakers. "Her impact was electric," says Hank Morris, a consultant who helped Democrat Charles Schumer beat Alfonse D'Amato in New York. "We trended up every time she was here." Hillary roped in $1 million for Schumer and $1.6 million for Barbara Boxer, who won a close Senate race in California. She played a key role in Tom Vilsack's last-minute shocker over former G.O.P. ...gave Hillary Rodham Clinton a "down arrow" because the candidates she stumped for in Illinois and Massachusetts failed to win their elections. But you failed to mention that it was perhaps due to her efforts that Chuck Schumer in New York managed to knock off Senator Pothole, AI D'Amato and Barbara Boxer was re-elected in California. And what about all the House candidates she campaigned for? Do you even have an inkling as to how they performed in the election? Given the outcome of the election, it's safe to assume that they did pretty darn well...

...concession speech spoke to us more than any other speech ever had. We identified with D'Amato's call to "my New Yorkers" and yearned for a hug. For we felt as if we, too, had lost. Dartboard is still employed, but with a Clinton-defending "feminist" representative, and two liberal senators, Dartboard also felt silenced. The voters of New York had stolen our voice...
