Washington state rescinded Davey’s Promise Scholarship when he decided to major in theology as a student at Northwest College in Kirkland, Wash. Davey, now attending the Law School, sued the state on the grounds that this decision infringed upon his First Amendment right to worship freely.
In addition, she reiterated her father’s opposition to a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would ban gay marriage, saying that her father is “committed to civil rights for all Americans.”
Earlier this week, President Bush announced his support for the proposed amendment, which is pending in Congress.
The College Dems board and legislative committee issued a statement last night denouncing the proposed amendment as a “cynical attack on millions of Americans for political gain.”
For their part, the College Dems and the BGLTSA said they would be carefully watching how the issue develops. If the amendment were ever put to a vote in the state legislature they would campaign against it.
