While the inclusionary zoning proposal was drafted to regulate new building developments in the city, members of the rent control advocacy groups asked the council to include an amendment in the proposal that would require developers in Cambridge to allocate 15 percent of their new units for affordable housing.
If these funds were bestowed by the military out of its own budget, the Solomon Amendment might possess some validity on the basis of quid pro quo logic. But these grants are totally unrelated to the armed services; their revocation would only prevent needy students from pursuing an education.
The law school is hopeful that it will still receive the affected grants. An ROTC program exists at nearby MIT, representatives of the military are not barred from campus if invited to speak by individual students and recruiters are provided with directory information.
