...stars are as engaging as the director demands. Morgan, here returning to the screen after an eight-year absence, makes the chic middle-aged murder suspect an aloof yet touching figure: she always retains her bourgeois hauteur, but we see the pain of her predict ament in the slight flickering of her large blue eyes. Reggiani is a delight. With his hound-dog face and wry manner, he is every bit as amusingly world-weary as Happy New Year's hero, Lino Ven tura. No wonder all the other characters openly adore...
Poetry Editor D.S. Ament has two poems here, one an untitled experiment in anti-syntax ("deep as death's yet pools are/her eyes") which has some interest but some impossible tin-ear cacaphony ("and then more than ever i know of"). His other effort, "The Deed," is doggeral. The rhythm of its short rimed phrases suggests Bob Dylan's fine song "Like a Rolling Stone," but comparison insults Dylan. When Dr. Ament died last year, National Park had a glamorous list of alumnae including Cinemactress Margaret Lindsay, Soprano Marion Claire, Irene Castle McLaughlin, the daughters of Walter P. Chrysler and Milton...
Although President Davis will head a new operating company formed to run the school, Widow Ament will retain control of National Park Seminary Co. which owns its "physical properties." These comprise a woodsy 200-acre campus with 44 buildings, including eight resident clubhouses built in the style of various nations. The English has a drawbridge, the Chinese resembles a pagoda. Other National Park wonders are a ballroom with 24 balconies, acres of antique furniture purchased by Dr. Ament during his travels, a Negro kitchen staff which appears on a balcony over the dining room to sing spirituals during meals. National...
