Captain Southerland was graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1872, and immediately after entered the navy as a midshipman. In 1896 he became a captain, and during the Spanish-American War served on the Cuban coast in command of the U. S. S. Eagle. Captain Southerland has written a number of scientific papers, among which are "Azimuth Tables," "Nautical Monograph No. 4," and "The North Atlantic Cyclone of August, 1883."
