...57th Street has been hallowed for years by the conservative exhibits of the National Academy of Design. Last week it was baptized in extremism by the first pontifical show ever held of U. S. abstract art. The showrooms were filled with 150 constructions, ranging from an arrangement of amoeba shapes, wires and an electric headlight, to round and oval salad bowls stuck on a chaste grey background. They were the work of some 50 members of the American Abstract Artists, a two-year-old and growing group which takes itself very seriously as the nucleus of a new geometric school...
...where most other cinemakers would aim at the funny bone. Whether the box offices will consider Producer Wanger as nifty a batter as Willie Keeler is another matter. Few Hollywood producers dare strike whimsical notes on the polymorphism of the ant, the physical advantage the paramecium holds over the amoeba. But in the capable hands of Henry Fonda & Joan Bennett, top Wanger stars, and an able cast, / Met My Love A gain's invertebrate allegories, its academic ups & downs, its ten changing years and its sopping-wet windup are invariably diverting, variably brilliant...
...remains in Manhattan as managing editor. But "Notes and Comment" will be written by a newcomer to the metropolitan scene, Romeyn ("Rym") Berry, longtime (1919-36) graduate manager of athletics at Cornell University. Last week National Peace Conference, an organization of some 30 peace societies, sent President Roosevelt a protest, signed by 450 churchmen, educators and businessmen, against "unprecedented" U. S. military expenditures. Also last week, by an amoeba-like proliferation which pacifist and religious movements often undergo, part of the personnel of the National Peace Conference made ready to launch an ambitious two-year Emergency Peace Campaign. In its first year the campaign plans to spend between $500,000 and $1,000,000, of which it has raised $150,000. Acting as treasurer of the campaign is the American Friends Service Committee...
...droll little mite is the leucocyte, scooting here & there, sending out inquisitive pseudopodia (prolongations) as does the amoeba. Policeman of the blood stream, it scavenges waste, destroys certain bacteria, ignoring some and gobbling others with gusto. Pus is compounded of dead bacteria, dead leucocytes. It is well known that the leucocyte count is high in infancy and old age, decreasing in between. Massage, exercise, eating proteins increase it; fasting lowers it. In such infections as pneumonia and appendicitis the white cells rush to the defense of the infected tissue, are replaced by peculiar polymorphonuclear-neutrophile cells, called "band-form" from...
