...people in Chicago who are intent on catching up with Kuala Lumpur I say, "Please, stop." I'm referring, of course, to the competition among cities to have the tallest building in the world. A few years ago the Malaysians erected twin towers that were 33 ft. higher than Chicago's Sears Tower, which had been the world's tallest building for more than 20 years. I realize that this was a serious provocation. A lot of Chicagoans have always been mildly offended by A.J. Liebling's description of Chicago as the Second City, after all, and even Liebling didn...

So-called adult material accounts for 69% of the $1.5 billion worth of online content--services that can be downloaded, including music and games--in the U.S. and Western Europe, according to a May 1999 study by research firm Datamonitor. But taking sanitized sex to the masses--and particularly to women--has given purveyors of erotica an entirely new audience. "Taking the smut out of sex is a clever thing to do," says Michael Poyner, retailing expert with London consultants Credo Group...

...thanks to a discovery reported last week in the journal Science. Digging in Madagascar, an international team headed by John Flynn of Chicago's Field Museum has unearthed the fossil jaws of two dinosaurs that appear to be around 230 million years old. "These are either the earliest or among the earliest dinosaurs known," comments University of Pennsylvania paleontologist Neil Shubin. The scientists also found fossils of eight other primitive animals, some of which are a key to the evolution of mammals, which arose at about the same time as the dinosaurs...
