Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne breeze through the lines with their usual versatility, assisted by a consistently good company. Playing the leader of a troupe of players with the same, vivacity that won him acclaim in "Amphitryon 38," Mr. Lunt is agile and amusing. He brightens up the stage with his flourishes and his tricks, spinning back and forth, "like a top." Miss Fontanne is demure and lovely as the romantic wife of a prosaic husband. Jack Smart excels as the dull West Indian Babbitt with the tyrannical past of a pirate...
...most people, Greek and Roman drama is something laid away in mothballs. Yet when, with modern tailoring, it is taken out and worn, most people admire it. When Broadway roared last season at Jean Giraudoux's Amphitryon 38, it was really patting some forgotten Greek dramatist on the back for his Amphitryon 1. When Broadway flocked to O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra, it was saluting Aeschylus' Oresteia with a Down-East accent. And given practically straight, Aristophanes' lewd, witty Lysistrata proved a Broadway...
...happens that accidents sometimes happen. One such accident was the failure of this department to state in Friday's review of "Amphitryon" that this picture is running at the Fine Arts. It was no accident, however, that this picture was very highly recommended...
...what is the 37th and in all probability the funniest dramatization of "Amphitryon," the French have substantially improved on Aristophanes' version of Jupiter's futile escapade. By the addition of Mercury (who impersonates General Amphitryon's adjutant) and in cleverly contrasting the characters of master and servant and god and mortal, the story has been given a masterful twist, a twist which incidentally lets Mercury succeed where Jupiter fails. Henri Garat as the bibulous deity and Armand Bernardas, his more conservative messenger, give brilliant performances opposite Jeanne Boitel and Odette Florelle, two charming citizens of Joinville, whose ardor the Hays...
...Philadelphia last week, State Senator George Woodward, one of Pennsylvania's wealthiest citizens and grouchiest politicos, smacked the genteel Philadelphia Forum for sponsoring the Lunt-Fontanne Amphitryon 38. Calling the show a "demoralizing influence," Censor Woodward said he objected not only as a Forum subscriber but also as "a subscriber to the Anti-Venereal Disease Society." Momentarily clutching the ropes, the Forum rallied, quoted Actor Lunt that "Queen Mary came to the play in London, and Queen Mary doesn't go to plays that are immoral...
