Hasselbach expanded his activities in post-Wall Berlin, where he organized attacks on rival anarchist gangs and foreign residents. In the early 1990s--about the same time he began questioning his choice of careers--Hasselbach found what he calls a new "father figure." He was a French-based German filmmaker who, in the course of making a documentary titled Profession Neo-Nazi, inspired the now weary 25-year-old Hasselbach to renounce his past...
Hopper's realism had nothing to do with the prevalent realisms of the 1930s and '40s in American painting. That is to say, it had no persuasive content; it was entirely free from ideology, left or right. He had studied painting with Robert Henri, whose politics were romantically anarchist. But none of the political ferment of pre-World War I New York rubbed off on him, and none shows in his work. The only painting in this show that could be guessed to show an industrial worker is Pennsylvania Coal Town, 1947; and the bald man is posed like Millet...
Unabomber is the self-styled anarchist who since 1978 has planted or mailed 16 package bombs that have killed three and wounded 23. Many of the victims were associated with universities or airlines, whence his name. Last week's first missive was an unsigned typewritten letter that arrived at the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday. Its contents were terse, unambiguous and bloodcurdling. "WARNING: the terrorist group F.C., called Unabomber by the FBI, is planning to blow up an airliner out of Los Angeles International Airport sometime during the next six days." To establish his credentials, the letter's author cited...
...whereabouts of the elusive killer. Nothing so far, though, has changed their profile of Unabomber as a single white male, probably in his early 40s, with at least a high school education and some experience, even if indirect, with higher learning. Although Unabomber claims to belong to an anarchist group called F.C., he appears to be a loner and a neat freak, whose deadly packages are constructed with care, even though some elements are homemade...
...York Times and The Washington Post are weighing a new and wrenching demand from the Unabomber: publish his 35,000-word anarchist manifesto, and he'll end a 17-year campaign of murder through the mail. Both newspapers received the mailed document Thursday. The newspapers would have to print three follow-up messages a year, and the Unabomberhas not promised to halt a campaign of blowing up buildings or other property. The offer has thrown the journalistic world onto the horns of a dilemma: "The bomber might be satisfied or he might not be," says Everette Dennis, executive director...
