Caught in a different dilemma is the hero of the second play, Boubouroche. "Dilemma" equals "horns" equals that traditional French anathema, cuckoldry. Which is precisely where the hapless Boubouroche finds himself. What is worse, he learns that he has been sporting his shameful appendage for eight whole years, since the very beginning of his liaison with his first and only mistress, Adele. Yet even when he catches her lover in the closet, he is powerless to unwind himself from around her little finger. For, as one of the actors puts it in a formally informal prologue to the double-bill...

...Cost of Anger. Soriano's modernity has its limits. Many of his employee benefits seem at least partly designed to keep his workers out of unions-which are anathema to Soriano. And his aristocratic hauteur has provoked resentments that are slow to die. A Spanish citizen by birth, Soriano supported the Franco regime in the 1930s, and when he became a Philippine citizen in 1941 was denounced by some Filipinos as a Fascist advance man. The charge cut so deeply that in 1945 Soriano angrily switched to U.S. citizenship-to which he was entitled because of his World...

Among the many voices praising this development, the cry of the few dissenters goes almost unheard. But, setting aside the reactionaries to whom change is anathema, the skeptics have something significant to say. For Radcliffe the lonely college possessed some attributes that Radcliffe the community of educational suffragettes may prove to lack. Perhaps the negative aspects of the many wise and already fruitful experiments that Mrs. Bunting has initiated are only the inevitable concomitants of progress toward a broader and deeper concept of women's education. And yet, one wonders...

...West German Socialists are hardly socialists at all. Never in power since West Germany became a nation in 1949, they know they can hope to beat Chancellor Konrad Adenauer's Christian Democrats only by dropping the talk of class consciousness, and by plugging policies that were anathema to the Socialists only a few years ago. Proclaimed West Berlin's Socialist Mayor Willy Brandt in his Cologne speech: "We say that the Federal Republic must cultivate and develop the relationship of trust with the United States." From SPD Economic Pundit Heinrich Deist there was no kind word for nationalization...

Even this semiconcession is anathema to many West Germans. But Bonn's Foreign Minister Gerhard Schroder is now backing Rusk's package, against the opposition of many prominent members of his own Christian Democratic Party. At the NATO meeting in Athens this week, Rusk will have a chance to brief Schroder and the other Western Allies on the latest in the U.S.-Soviet talks, sample their moods and rally their support. No matter what the West Germans do, France will doubtless remain stiffly aloof, for Charles de Gaulle remains adamantly opposed to any Berlin negotiations "under threat." Besides...
