Denmark's Hans Christian Hansen, another Socialist, echoed the Norwegian line. Then West Germany's tough-minded Chancellor Konrad Adenauer spoke up. Despite the fact that the Bulganin notes talked vaguely of a neutralized Germany -a prospect that is anathema to Adenauer-the West German Chancellor was no longer prepared to accept the U.S. lead in the matter of East-West negotiations. Said he: "I would see no objection to attempting to inquire through diplomatic channels from the Soviet government what precise conceptions form the basis of these proposals...

...breed of action painters. Soulages follows the trail blazed by Hans Hartung (TIME, April i), but carries to the extreme the view that "reality is not in appearance alone, but also in what men feel, think, imagine." For him, even the calligraphy of brush strokes is anathema, a romantic hangover from the days when the viewer, willy-nilly, could follow the painter's hand, guess and second-guess his intentions and hesitations. Soulages. with his plank-sized strokes, aims to hit the spectator with one knockout blow...

Even though the bill provided only for a possible federative system of internal government in which the European colonials would keep a measure of power, it was unacceptable to the deputies who see France as she was at the height of Napoleon's Empire. This romanticism combined with the unrelenting opposition of the wealthy colonials now in control of Algeria combined to defeat the one measure short of immediate independence which might have been acceptable to the Algerian National Liberation Front...

...fall among the economy-minded Republicans, who narrowly control the upper house of the General Court. Although he was elected with heavy support from organized labor, the new Governor has proposed to raise added tax revenue by a state-wide three percent limited sales tax, traditionally the breadwinner's anathema. His party, meanwhile--under Senate leader John E. Powers and buttressed by a detailed survey prepared by Arnold M. Soloway, assistant professor of Economics--has stood strongly behind temporary relief through eliminating loopholes in the existing structure. To the terror of the Associated Industries, Soloway proposes as a long term...
