...used there with great success. The British program is the antithesis of highly structured, authoritarian public school techniques. Community schools permit even kindergarten children large amounts of freedom in choosing what they want to study. Children flow freely between age-grouping according to ability and inclination. Grading is anathema and testing itself is frowned upon. Most of the schools are just now getting around to evaluating the achievement of their students, using tests specially developed for the British Primary School model...

Life, however, rejects his resurrection. He is fired from his job as a travel clerk ("Who wants their annual holiday booked by a former corpse?"), branded an anathema by society ("As long as Godfrey were to live and work among people,' each one would be faced constantly with the fact of his own death"), and even resented by his family for the inconvenience of his miracle ("We're Before and After people now," laments his wife). His life after death, not surprisingly, becomes a downhill slide: the authorities strip him of his children, his neighbors stone...

Harris' biggest asset has been his courage in espousing liberal causes that are often anathema to his conservative Oklahoman constituents. As a member of the Kerner Commission, which investigated black-ghetto rioting in 1967, Harris, son of a Mississippi-born sharecropper, was the principal advocate of the commission's strongly worded condemnation of white racism and its demands for programs to wipe out Negro slums. Humphrey has said he is "determined" to keep joblessness at a minimum; Nixon vows to fight inflation "without increasing unemployment." In Washington, Chief White House Economic Adviser Arthur Okun took exception to the view that braking measures would have to be continued for very long. Inflation, he warned, might be less of a hazard than a prolonged slowdown, which could bring on "a stall and perhaps a tailspin...

George Wallace has been the only candidate able to pick up any states in the past month's campaigning-even though he has dropped somewhat in at least one poll. In Arkansas he has taken the lead from Humphrey, whose liberalism is anathema to rural Arkies, and might even manage to carry urban Pulaski County (Little Rock). South Carolina's Senator Strom Thurmond has been stumping the South for Nixon but strangely neglecting South Carolina. Wallace, as a result, has edged ahead. Thurmond's own supporters are so concerned that a Wallace victory would damage the Senator...
