EVEN THE OBVIOUSLY REAL scenes take on a dream-like quality. At the beginning, Eugenia visits a small chapel, a shrine to the Madonna of Childbirth. The chapel is half-dark, with ancient rows of pillars lit by hundreds of fluttering candles. All about, black clad women are performing the rituals of worship. Eugenia finds that she cannot bring herself to kneel, and asks the sacristan why only women are worshipping. He tells her that child-bearing and the church are their business; she says nothing in reply. All of a sudden, the air is full of small birds that...
Visions of riches have drawn Americans to China ever since the first U.S. ship arrived in Canton precisely 200 years ago this summer. Last week that ancient quest continued. Led by Treasury Secretary Donald Regan, a 34-member delegation journeyed to Peking in hopes of boosting commerce with the world's most populous country. Although the dangers of alcohol consumption during pregnancy were recognized by the ancient Greeks, it has been only in the past decade that FAS has become a subject for research. U.S. Government and other researchers' estimates of the incidence of alcohol-caused defects range from one in 500 births to one in 10,000. Drinking during pregnancy has also been associated with a greater risk of miscarriage. One clue to the cause of these effects comes from National Institutes of Health...

The author tries to chronicle the complete history of children and youth from the times of ancient civilizations. In 200 pages he travels through time from Mesopotamia and Sparta through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the twentieth century. In the remaining 40 pages, he finally attacks the problems of today, and tries to set up comprehensive guidelines for the future. This rush through the "rise and fall" of children ultimately undermines his own cause, Loiry, a professional political activist...
...century, the Romans made it a grand boulevard lined with columns and shopping arcades. It continued to be maintained under Byzantine rule. In 1971 a plan was devised to build a cluster of town houses and a shopping mall along the nearby Street of the Jews. But when ancient column stubs were found, from both Roman and Byzantine times, Architects Peter Bugod and Esther Niv-Kren-del kept redesigning the prizewinning project to keep pace with the digging. The result is a stunning feat of urban design. Shops have opened in the ancient arcades. The great columns lend drama...
