This problem did not persist in the andantino of the second movement, a mostly dark and quiet meditation which the pianist delivered with intelligence. Haefliger, whose father Ernst is a great tenor, always imparted a vocal quality to the music, even in the note-heavy presto rondo. The cadenzas in both the first and third movements had dramatic as well as technical and even visual interest: Haefliger played with his eyes closed but turned toward the ceiling, and wore an expression of ecstatic concentration, his upper body resembling a bust of Homer. The orchestra that had commanded comparatively little attention...
...performance, however, suffered from an obvious lack of rehearsal, with the pianist and the conductor, Vassily Sinaisky, unable to agree on basic matters of tempo: Cliburn finished the first movement a good half-beat ahead of the band. The andantino movement went well enough, but disaster struck in the blazing finale, which fell apart in a tug-of-war -- Cliburn pulling ahead, Sinaisky dragging back. The battle increased in intensity until, all at once, Cliburn suddenly appeared to lose interest, and the piece almost collapsed near the end in a welter of notes...
With brilliant decor and alien music, Robbins gives this ballet a fresh-as- tomorrow look, but the choreography blends fairly closely with two other strong Robbins works now in repertory, Piano Pieces and the brief Andantino. And as always, Robbins nods to the dances of his mentor George Balanchine, particularly swift, sharply etched Rubies and the propulsive Agon. He is experimenting with a new kind of music, and how far he will go is unclear. But in the meantime he puts on a hell of a show...
