In Mexico, Alex (Kevin Anderson), a fugitive sailor, falls in with Missy (Rosanna Arquette) and Mills (John Lithgow), a married couple linked like felons on a chain gang. There is a slim mystery, with the federales in pursuit, but this is at heart a study of the cages three people have made of their lives. Mills says what they all feel: "I just can't get out of this goddam life...

...bubbleheadedness, Marilyn & Bobby is slickly mounted. Melody Anderson and James F. Kelly (who played R.F.K. in three previous TV movies) do passable impersonations, and director Bradford May keeps the close-ups tight and the action fast; the re-created Senate-hearing clashes between Kennedy and Hoffa are more convincing than anything Danny DeVito managed in Hoffa. If Marilyn & Bobby were not about two historical figures whose actual lives -- as opposed to the fantasies people continue to build around them -- still matter to us, Marilyn & Bobby could possibly be dismissed as harmless...

...excels at narrative clarity, which is present in the original, but not at nuancing characters, which is sorely needed with such miscast stars. As Norma, renowned for delicate beauty, Patti LuPone is too tempestuous, too earthy and too coarse of feature, especially her aardvark nose. As her lover, Kevin Anderson looks pudding-faced and pudgy, so long gone to seed that the supposedly vast age difference disappears -- until the finale, when LuPone inexplicably appears 20 years older than she was moments before. While she is a fine if loud singer, he is at best ordinary. The supporting cast is without...
