Pakistani officials suggest that the situation along the frontier has worsened since President Mohammed Zia ul-Haq met last month in Moscow with Mikhail Gorbachev, the new Soviet leader, and Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko. Zia was told by the Soviets that Pakistan's policy toward Afghanistan --collaboration with the resistance and cooperation with the U.S.--could cause the relationship between Moscow and Islamabad to deteriorate. Though that line was not new, Zia was said to have been shaken by the conversation...
Bach's music is exceedingly complex, sometimes combining four or five melodies at once, and Andrei A. Molotin '88, a self-proclaimed Bach fanatic, said that this complexity may explain why Bach was not so popular in his own time. Molotin labelled Bach's music emotionless and pure, and said it should not be played in the more flowing romantic style, which would cause some of the structure to be lost...

"He has great control," said a French diplomat. "He was the only one who did not show anything...
...maintain the power balance in the leadership until a younger generation was ready to take over. Within two months of assuming power, Chernenko secured the additional titles of President and chairman of the Defense Council. They carried more honor than substance: Chernenko was said to defer to Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko on diplomatic matters and to defense leaders on military questions. Indeed, Gromyko sometimes appeared so confident of his power that he would interrupt Chernenko during meetings with foreign delegations...
