...CANCER. A challenging case treated by Dr. William G. Cahan at Manhattan's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center involved a cancer of the tongue, 2 in. by 1¼ in., in an 84-year-old man. After only a mouthwash sort of anesthesia, Dr. Cahan froze the surface of the cancer. Later he inserted the liquid nitrogen probe deep into the tissue. In each of three required operations, the tissues were frozen and allowed to thaw. The patient complained of only a mild burning sensation that lasted a few hours after each treatment. In three weeks, the cancer shrank...
Atlas of Anatomy. The surgeons needed free access to the patient's neck region, so they cut a hole into his windpipe and inserted a tube through which he got all later anesthesia. They clamped his jaws tightly shut and fastened his head in a frame to hold it at an unnatural angle-at first, 15° backward and 20° to the left. They made a long incision from below his ear around past the windpipe. At last, U.C.'s Dr. Roland K. Perkins and Dr. Ronald J. Stoney could start moving closer to the target...
...first of all was relative freedom from pain and fever. Then they were relieved to find that they did not need to make that dreaded trip to the operating room for skin grafting. What little grafting they needed was done at the bedside and was virtually painless, even without anesthesia. Finally, doctors and patients alike could watch the wounds heal with a minimum of scarring (except where the burn had penetrated deep into the flesh) or deformities...
Lifting the Leg. No less important than the actual surgical repair of Namath's knee will be the retraining of his muscles to make his right leg at least as strong as his left. Even as he first opened his eyes after coming out of the anesthesia, the 195-lb., 6-ft. 2-in. athlete found Dr. Nicholas holding his ankle and ordering him to raise his right leg. When he tried to do so, the effort was almost as painful as his original injury. But Namath gamely kept trying. No matter how much it hurts, he will have...
...male operation, or vasectomy, is a minor operation-quicker, simpler and cheaper. It is usually done in a doctor's office, under local anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision in one side of the scrotum and pulls out a length of the vas deferens, the tube through which spermatozoa pass from the testis on the way to the urethra. He cuts out about half an inch of the tube and ties off both ends, and repeats the operation on the other side. It can all be done in about 15 minutes, for an average...
