ALEXIS WEISSENBERG: RACHMANINOFF PI ANO CONCERTO NO. 3 IN D MINOR (RCA Victor); CHOPIN PIANO CONCERTO NO. 1 IN E MINOR, PIANO CONCERTO NO. 2 IN F MINOR, and SMALLER WORKS FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA (Angel, 3 LPs). After returning to the U.S. last year from a decade-long self-imposed exile, Weissenberg, now 39, changed his first name from Sigi to Alexis. He obviously had some new musical ideas on his mind too. In the Rachmaninoff, the Bulgarian-born pianist displays a Horowitz-like technique, a poet's heart and vast reserves of power; he throws up wave...
EMIL GILELS: BEETHOVEN'S FIVE PIANO CONCERTOS (Angel, 5 LPs). Recorded last April in Cleveland with Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra, this set often finds the Soviet pianist more in a mood to polish his tone than to push Beethoven's cause. The concertos are all neatly and expertly done, but they rarely express the excitement, abandon and sheer joy of the music. Gilels does better in the three sets of solo variations that constitute the sidefillers; the 32 Variations in C Minor is especially notable for its logic and rhythmic verve. But as a whole, this ambitious...
Jane sets out in a pink spaceship, complete with psychedelic color effects and a cozy computer reminiscent of 2001's HAL. She heads back a year later in the arms of a beautiful blond, blind male angel (John Phillip Law). In between, she meets some topflight actors who are all too lost in space-Marcel Marceau as the wizardly Professor Ping, Claude Dauphin as the President of Earth, Ugo Tognazzi as a friendly inhabitant of Planet Lytheon. Her only really amusing encounter is with David Hemmings, an inept leader of the Lytheon underground who has a hankering...
...relationship between John Singer (Alan Arkin), the deaf-mute who unites the five disparate subplots of the novel, and a young girl named Mick (Sondra Locke), and made it the central theme of the movie. Curiously, although we now see more of Singer, he has become a guardian angel rather than the guiding light he was in the novel. One no longer has the feeling that his presence is essential in the lives of most of the characters. He now just hovers about at a distance. Singer's tragedy--the fact that he never really becomes a part...
...masterpiece of the exhibition is easily Jacopo Pontormo's Annunciation. Rarely, in this country, has the troubling 16th century mannerist been represented by such an ethereal, yet commanding, picture. Looming above the onlooker, Pontormo's Angel Gabriel is shown as a dissipated Florentine gallant with an exquisite shell-pink ear, hennaed locks and a flattened head. As for the Virgin Mary, she is both innocent and sophisticated, a strangely languorous vessel of the Lord, whose fashionable lilac coif emits a greenish, phosphorescent glow...
