...comic theater, directors are faced with certain temptations. Very few actors, for example, can pull off a good Russian accent, and the cast members of The Good Doctor are not among this elite. If Goldman had dropped the Russian accents, the "Drowned Man" scene, in which David Angel employs a hilarious Monty Python accent, would have seemed more consistent. Other excesses of voice and gesture occur too much at random to be enjoyable and too much to be believably off-beat. In going for the cheap laugh, Goldman unfortunately loses his otherwise perfectly Chekhovian control and his sense of comic...
...great future. There is, of course, considerable skepticism about whether spiritual experiences can be studied at all with any degree of success. The late Philip Toynbee, a writer and critic and son of Historian Arnold Toynbee, wrote that Hardy's quest was the equivalent of "trying to catch an angel in his butterfly...

"The Mask Maker" is a delight: Marceau first carves masks, then tries two of them on alternately, frantically switching his demeanor from one of vapid joy to one of scowling horror. The joy mask gets stuck on his head. Another successful number is "The Angel," in which Marceau portrays an angel who periodically visits earth. Just when he is in the throes of embrace or of drink, heavenly music and light surround him to remind him to behave properly...
...rightly so. Most of its details are incredible. Buffeted by cruel fate, the bird-girl sinks to enforced servitude in the establishment of one Madame Schreck, who runs a particularly nasty pornographic peep show. Fevvers, by now known throughout the London demimonde as the Virgin Whore, plays the Angel of Death in erotic tableaux. Hearing that her mistress has sold her services for a trifle, the rara avis explodes: "What, 50 rotten guineas for the only fully feathered intacta in the entire history of the world? Call yourself a procuress...
