Josef von Sternberg was a famous Hollywood auteur in 1930 and Dietrich a minor Berlin actress when he cast her as Lola, the crass chanteuse of The Blue Angel. Just like that, a star was born: an anti-Garbo who viewed life and love as a series of awful amusements. In their seven films together--of which a terrific trio (Morocco, Blonde Venus and The Devil Is a Woman) are included here--Sternberg swathed Dietrich's wry sexuality in silk, feathers, a gorilla suit and his camera's soft-focus devotion. As his films got more deliriously abstract...

...Venezuela may have another reason to celebrate at this week's meeting, which will be held on Thursday before Ch?vez takes OPEC delegates to El Salto Angel, the world's highest waterfall, in southeast Venezuela. The country, which has about 78 billion barrels of proven crude reserves, also sits atop an estimated 275 billion barrels of heavy crude, which new technology has allowed to become more refinable and, as a result, a more legitimate addition to a nation's reserves. His adventures that day are proved by the hoofprint, sharp and clear, that Buraq left on the Rock beneath the sacred Dome...

...Nothing's that simple, in life, or certainly in this movie. We're all victims, at times, and victimizers at other times. Yussef is an agent, an angel, of death. He's also a very charming, then very scared kid. Debbie and Mike, I suppose, are clearly victims, but the two child actors, especially Nathan Gamble, play fear beautifully. Chieko is a scarred creature, who can communicate only through extreme measures, and suffers the memory of finding her dead mother (a suicide victim who shot herself--another gun!). The children in Babel are complicated human beings, just like the adults...

...more troubling because the city is “possibly the most friendly place to be transsexual in the country.” Keisling summed up the need for self-determination in the transgender movement by telling an anecdote about three mice who go to heaven, ask an angel for rollerskates, receive them, and are subsequently eaten by three cats who praise heaven’s “meals on wheels” program. “The point of that story,” Keisling said, “is that if you’re not part...
