...Angelika Kirchschlager is not your usual opera star. An unruly mop of ringlets frames her impish features. Her soft voice breaks into a surprisingly boisterous laugh. She radiates an easy warmth, sports a leather jacket, chews gum and likes her cigarettes and wine - though they don't seem to cloud the celestial clarity of her voice. If Kirchschlager is the anti-diva, that makes her the perfect choice to star in Sophie's Choice, the new opera based on William Styron's best-selling 1979 novel. ...reactions are sacred or scared. Justin Renfroe, 27, an Atlanta exterminator, shrugs and says, "I guess I didn't get it." He will advise friends to "wait for the video." After a midnight show at the Angelika, the indie showplace in lower Manhattan where Blair Witch had its theatrical premiere on July 14, a vocal minority is shouting, like a high school football cheer, a chorus of "Bulllllsh__!" But a few persist in believing, even after the final cast and credit roll, that this clever fiction is for real--a documentary that ends in death. "You mean...

Near the end of the market's five-day run, the lobby of the Angelika Film Center was still aswarm with writer-producer-directors passing out handbills, waving placards, showing trailers on handheld DVD players, almost literally collaring people to see their films. It was marketing as hand-to-hand combat, an uneasily direct communion between filmmaker and potential audience member. The pitches: a blaxploitation parody starring a white guy! An ex-cop grandma wages war on her grandson's kidnappers! A lost relic with aphrodisiacal powers--Jesus' foreskin--turns up in Manhattan! "Pringles financed my movie," a commercial actor...
